Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the new school year! As ever, it is great to have had all of the children back over the last two weeks and they all seem to be settling in with their new teachers and enjoying being in their new classrooms. I wanted to write with a few reminders so that all families are kept up-to-date at the start of the year.

Firstly, it is really pleasing to see all of the children looking very smart in their school uniforms. I wanted to reinforce the expectation that all pupils are to wear correct school uniform in order to develop a sense of belonging and pride amongst the children. School uniform is: blue jumpers or cardigans, white/blue polo shirts, grey or black trousers/skirts and suitable school shoes (not trainers). In addition, we will continue to ask pupils to come to school dressed in the agreed PE kit on their PE days – plain white/blue t-shirt and black shorts (grey or black tracksuit). If parents have purchased a ‘house’ colour t-shirt these can also be worn. Thank you to the families already supporting this. Staff in school have noticed a handful of children wearing hooped earrings and some necklaces/chains. This is a reminder that children should not be wearing additional jewellery to school for Health and Safety reasons. Stud earrings and watches are allowed; however, necklaces/chains and bracelets should not be worn.

Secondly, we aim to ensure high attendance and punctuality amongst our children. Therefore, it is important that pupils attend school and are on time every day wherever possible. This is to ensure that they benefit from accessing all of their learning. Please remember, that the school gates open at 8.40am to allow 10 minutes for children to enter their classrooms to start the school day at 8.50am. Any children arriving after this time, must report to the School Office. The school day finishes at 3.25am, when pupils should be collected or walk home (if school has been informed). Persistent late pick-ups by parents will be monitored and these will be followed up with individual families.

Finally, please ensure your child completes all of their home learning and return it to school on the agreed days. Reading forms part of daily practice within school and we ask that parents support reading at home. All pupils should aim to read daily at home (even for 10mins) and they will benefit from reading to adults and discussing their reading. School has provided Reading Records that we ask to be completed by pupils and signed weekly by parents. These will be checked by staff and any pupils who complete the Records will be entered into our ‘Reading Champions’ prize draw each month. All reading books and diaries can be kept in the school reading bags also provided by school. Other home learning – TTRS, Spellings, English and/or Maths will be provided and log-ins given to the children.

Everyone at HJS looks forward to working with you over the next year. If you have any queries, please contact your child’s class teacher or the School Office for further support.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Fowler                                                                                                                                                                                            Headteacher
